If you’re lucky…you can get Spanked!

November 1, 2010

Years ago at a company I worked for, the employees had a check pool. When we got paid every two weeks, everybody would put in a dollar, and each time a name would be drawn. The winner usually got about $100. I worked for the company for five and half years, participated every time, and NEVER won. Some people won several times. Some people won twice in a row. Me? Never.

When it comes to drawings and contests, I’m one of the unluckiest people you’ll ever meet.

BUT: I have a much better track record with reader contests… the ones where you read an excerpt or post a comment on someone’s blog or website and you’re entered into a drawing. I’ve won three free books in as many months.

If I can win, you can too. My publisher, Black Velvet Seductions, recently had a contest to win a two free copies of Spanked! the domestic discipline anthology co-authored by moi. To enter, all people had to do was post on the BVS blog the answer to the question, “What would you do for a copy of Spanked!?” The contest ran for over a week and BVS got eight responses. Only eight. That was a one-in-four chance to win.

My experience with reader contest is that they don’t get that many entries and I don’t understand why. It’s a great way to get introduced to a new author and it’s free! What is the reluctance to enter? I’d love to know your thoughts on why you do or don’t enter reader contests or why you think other people don’t enter.

But while you’re here…you have another chance to win a copy of Spanked! My co-author Ric Savage is sponsoring his own contest. He wrote the story, “In the Driving Seat” in the anthology. Click on his blog link below to answer the question, “What would you do for a copy of Spanked!?”
